SRU to Convene A Consensus Conference on Early First Trimester Sonography

In October 2012 the SRU will convene a consensus conference on early first trimester sonography, focusing on establishing sonographic criteria for excluding the possibility of a viable pregnancy. The conference will be held October 23-24, 2012 in Baltimore, MD and moderated by SRU Fellow and Immediate Past President Peter M. Doubilet, MD, PhD. The panel for the conference will include physicians with expertise in early pregnancy from several specialty areas, including radiology, obstetrics and gynecology (including reproductive medicine) and emergency medicine.

The conference will be supported by funds from the SRU Foundation (SRUF), the 501(c)(3) arm of the SRU. The SRUF accepts donations, which are tax-deductible, from SRU members as well as the general public. Foundation funds are used to support the missions of the SRU, including ultrasound research and consensus conferences.

During the past ten years the SRU has convened five multispecialty consensus conferences on clinical issues related to ultrasound. These conferences brought together physicians from the field of radiology as well as other specialties to discuss clinical questions and arrive at a consensus on how a particular clinical issue should be handled. Previous conferences were:

·          A 2011 conference on imaging of the painful shoulder. The consensus statement is currently being written and will be submitted to major journals for publication.

·         A 2009 conference on management of asymptomatic ovarian and other adnexal cysts imaged at ultrasound.  The consensus statement was published in the September 2010 issues of Radiology and Ultrasound QuarterlyClick here to read the consensus statement.

·         A 2005 conference on management of thyroid nodules detected at ultrasound.  The consensus statement was published in the December 2005 issue of Radiology and the December 2006 issue of Ultrasound QuarterlyClick here to read the consensus statement.

·         A 2003 conference on carotid artery stenosis.  The consensus statement was published in the November 2003 issue of Radiology and the December 2003 issue of Ultrasound QuarterlyClick here to read the consensus statement.

·         A 2001 conference on evaluation of the woman with postmenopausal bleeding.  The consensus statement was published in the March 2002 issues of Radiology and Ultrasound QuarterlyClick here to read the consensus statement.

The SRU has joined the Alliance for Radiation Safety in Pediatric Imaging, an initiative of the Society for Pediatric Radiology. The Alliance recently launched Phase 2 of its Image Gently campaign, Resources for Parent Education. For more information on the Image Gently campaign, please click on the link to the right.

The American College of Radiology has launched a website called ACRIVS (ACR International Volunteer System) to provide access to its members and other visitors interested in providing assistance to countries outside the United States. The major goal of ACRIVS is to provide a marketplace for donors and facilities to match their needs and supplies.
